Where We Are Now

We landed this afternoon at Ely KOA Journey, pretty much right in the middle of Nevada, elevation, 6500 ft. This is just a stop-over for a night, but it really is a nice campground. We plan to drive around this after and check out the town.

Natchez Trace RV & Camping Resort, Hohenwald, TN

Our Visit

Thousand Trails      Our original thought on choosing Natchez Trace to camp at was to visit Nashville, but we never made it there.  We had planned on staying for six days and moving on toward Memphis, but the couple (Bud and Melanie) next to us at Diamond Caverns were heading there the day after us so we added four more days to spend more time visiting with them.  (Also, Melanie was sewing us new curtains.)

Another couple (Ron & Glenda) that we had met at Diamond Caverns also joined us a week later.  On our first day there we checked out the store/cafe and met some of the local people who invited us to join them at their table for breakfast.  That wound up being a daily thing.  We also met three other couples there, one park ranger and his wife (Thomas & Pam), the other two (Bob & Debi) & (Rick & Kim) had also been at Diamond Caverns while we were there but we hadn't met them yet.  With all the truly great people there, we added another four days to our stay.

When we arrived at the campground we went off in search of a full hook-up with 50 amps, but the only one available was in a bad location in the sun and at the time our AC wasn't working.  So we then looked for a 30 amp full hookup site and found only a few of them, but they were also in full sun.  So we found a great spot under the trees (I had to trim some branches while standing on the motorhome for us to back in)  It was 30 amps and no septic hookup, but it was a great spot and there was a full hookup 30 amp spot that Bud and Melanie could use when they came the following day.  Our park ranger friend (Thomas) set us up with a pumping service, so after five days we ponied up $10 bucks and got pumped out.  When Ron & Glenda showed up, there were a few full hookup sites at the beach and we all moved over there.  We occupied four of the seven beach sites for the Labor Day weekend.  It was camping at its best.  Thomas offered up his pontoon boat to use while he was working and once we took him up on his generous offer, we drove it back to the beach and picked up the rest of the clan and enjoyed a couple of hours out on the lake.

The weekend before Labor Day the campground hosted a charity auto show which featured mostly "Rat Rods".  It was an interesting take on restoring old cars.  The campground is also located right next to the Natchez Trace.  The Natchez Trace is a 444-mile long national park.  It's a road starting from Natchez, Mississippi extending north almost to Nashville.  No commercial vehicles are allowed on the road and it has a 50 mph speed limit throughout.  It followed a trail that pioneers used as they traveled north through the area.  The site where Meriwether Lewis is buried is pretty close to the campground.  That, and the Amish community nearby are just about the only thing to see near the campground as Nashville is about an hour and a half drive.

From what we understand about the campground is that the previous owners were going bankrupt when Thousand Trails picked it up.  There are over 500 sites and it's very spread out.  Because of the park's age, most of the sites are 30 amp without septic.  Most of the facilities are run down and are in need of a lot of work.  There are only seven sites at the beach that are near the lake that are available for "transients", the rest of the lakefront sites are annual sites.  Hopefully, with enough annual sites, the park will be able to make the improvements that it desperately needs.  The campground also has a lot of cabins, which we didn't learn much about.  I think the number one draw to the campground is the people who live there, work there, and live nearby.  Everyone we met was so nice.  The other nice feature is the cafe that serves three meals a day with the best prices.  Jackie and I both ate breakfast there every day for around six dollars together.  I'm sure that the campground will continue making improvements and we're looking forward to our next visit.

Campground number one hundred twenty-one.

Winter Quarters Manatee RV Resort

Winter Quarters Manatee RV Resort

I arrived at the resort and was invited to hop in a golf cart and ride with a host to pick a site that would work best for us.  The campground is basically a loop around a lake, so I picked a site near the pool and not next door to anyone else.  We walked around the park a bit, there are two pools, a hot tub, and a lodge.  The park host was very nice and the park seemed well maintained, but we weren't there long enough to get much more than that.  People who we had met at a previous park visited at the park and the next day we spent it with them at there home, so we didn't get much of an opportunity to go explore the area, other than to find a post office.

Centrally located in Florida

Water views and activities abound at Winter Quarters Manatee RV Resort! This beautiful RV resort in Florida boasts a fantastic central location near Anna Marie Island, Siesta Key, St. Armand's Circle, Ringling Museum and Busch Gardens. Space Coast RV Resort

Space Coast RV Resort

Space Coast RV Resort is located right off I-95 and is about twenty-five minutes from Cocoa Beach.  The campground is an Encore park and we used our Trails Collection membership to stay free.  We were assigned a site and escorted to it.  The resort is a mixture of park models, permanent trailers and RV's  Most of the RV sites seem to be pull-throughs, but there are a few back-in.  I'm not sure how your site is selected, but our was fine although it was in the very back of the park.  While walking the dogs, everyone was friendly and said hi.  It seems like a silly way to judge a park, but it works.  The pool is small but nice.  Nice ponds and lots of grass.  In the park, there are raccoons, bunnies, ducks, & turtles (as far as what we saw).  One turtle swam up to us and climbed up on the bank.  On other visits to his pond, we brought lettuce, but he wasn't interested in eating.

From the park, it's about a thirty-minute drive to the beach.  If you drive south of Cocoa Beach a couple of miles parking to access the beach is free.  The beach was nice and we walked it a couple of times during our week visit.  The one morning that drove to the beach before sunrise, it rained very hard so I couldn't get any sunrise photos over the Atlantic.  We also took a day to drive west to Orlando to meet up with friends for lunch at Disney Springs.  It's a tough drive with Friday traffic, construction, and trying to avoid tolls, but it's all about friends, so it's worth it.

Space Coast RV Resort is your perfect location to explore Florida’s beautiful Space Coast! Close to Cape Canaveral, we have large campground sites, 50 amp service, wifi, laundry facilities, and lots of activities.

Visit the Kennedy Space Center, go fresh and saltwater fishing, shop til you drop and then come home to relax. What more could you ask for? Make your Space Coast RV park reservation today and come stay with us for as long as you would like!

Sherwood Forest RV Resort

Sherwood Forest RV Resort

Sherwood Forest was the second half of our Disney visit.  It is located a little more than a mile up the road from Tropical Palms.  We switched parks early on a Sunday morning and we were assigned a nice pull-through site across from the pool.   The resort has most of the standard amenities, pool, hot tub, put-put golf, shuffleboard courts and so on.  I do have to say that it has by far the nicest miniature golf course that I've seen, only I never did get the chance to play it as Disney was our main reason for being there.  The resort is great and the people are friendly.  The office opened a half an hour early to let us in.  Also, our neighbors were very nice as well.  Jackie and I were sitting outside playing cribbage watching three other couples across the road barbecuing and enjoying a lively conversation.  Then the guy doing the barbecuing walked over and gave us a plate of prime rib and bread.  After the group broke up we walked over to say thank you and wound up being invited for more barbecue and libation.  A few minutes later, one of the other couples returned and it became a party.  I know that I've said this several times, but this is really the best part of the RV life, meeting new friends.

On our second day there, Jackie's best friend flew in from Washington State to join us for a few days.  That night we checked out Disney Springs.  The next two days Jackie and DeeAnne visited two parks a day while I joined them for one each day.  (upgrading to a park-hopper pass was $80)  So I did Epcot and the Animal Kingdom a second time while Jackie did all four again.  I can't say enough how impressed I was with the Animal Kingdom enough.  Not only were the animals great, but I took more time to look at the details that they put into creating Pandora and this huge living tree.

Pine Lake RV Park

Pine Lake RV Park

Pine Lake was a stop-over park on our way to Disney World so we didn't disconnect the car and explore the area.  We checked in on a Sunday and there was no one in the office, but after leaving a phone message, I received a return call directing me to take a site in a general area and check-in the day.  That was fine, there were lots of great sites and the park is really beautiful.  We took advantage of the small laundromat and did some walking around, but that was it. I'm sure that we will visit this park again and perhaps stay a bit longer to explore the area.

Highland Wood RV Park

Written by

Highland Woods Travel Park

We decided on camping here in the city near Fort Lauderdale so that we could visit my cousin Loren Brown.  Breezy Hill & Highland Woods are next to each other and share ownership.  I originally picked Breezy Hill because it has a much nicer pool, but changed to Highland Woods because Breezy Hill doesn't allow pets.  Both parks this time of year are pretty much empty and with the rain, we didn't get a chance to use the pool anyway.  The park is old and is set up weird.  It has staggering sites, a short 30amp site next to a long 50amp site.  The other odd thing is that the septic connections are located directly under your RV.  We are not all that impressed with the park, it needs a lot of work.  When you are booked into Highland woods, you'll arrive here to find that there is no place to check in.  You have to know to check in at Breezy Hill then turn around and drive down the street to get to Highland Woods.  The gates here are placebos and have no code, just drive up and they open from either direction.  There are signs stating that it is patrolled by security, but I'm guessing those are placebos as well.  I think that I will avoid this park in the future.

We did take a drive around town and checked out Pompano Beach, which was very nice.  After an hour or so we drove up A1A along the beach 20 miles or so but really couldn't view the beach from the road.  However there were very nice homes on the beach side of the road and beautiful yachts along the channel side, so it wasn't a bad drive.  After that, we met my cousin (who I hadn't seen in 40 years) for lunch.  That was great!

Located in South Florida's Pompano Beach, Highland Woods Travel Park offers daily, weekly, monthly, and annual rates on 147 full-hookup sites. Each site features a lawn area and patio. Dining, shopping and sporting events are all located nearby.

Fort Myers Beach RV Resort

Fort Myers Beach RV Resort

We pulled into the park on a Saturday morning to find no one in the office, but we did find a package with campground information, our name, and site number.  Once at the site, we found it to have no power.  We picked another site close by which worked out.  The resort was more of just an RV park.  There is a pool and a few other amenities, but not really resort material.  It looks like they are adding new power locations for sites, but they are located right at the road and too far to reach from your RV and they impede pulling forward out of your site.  The roads are very narrow and are all one-way roads with every other alternating.  The sites are set up like pull-throughs, but with the one-way roads, you need to pull forward into them and back out of them.  The park is nice enough and the people we did meet were very friendly, however, we never did meet any staff.

The park is located very close to the beach, which is why we chose it in the first place and Fort Myers Beach is very nice.  While out on the pier we got a close look at pelicans diving from the pier's handrails to catch fish.  We also got to watch a pair of dolphins swimming about.  Near the pier is a nice area with shops and places to eat.

A tropical Fort Myers RV campground in Florida
Tropical paradise is the norm when you book a stay at Fort Myers Beach RV Resort. Our impeccably landscaped grounds, clean facilities and unbeatable Ft. Fiesta Key RV Resort

Fiesta Key RV Resort

Our trip to the Keys took us across Florida on 41 (Aligator Alley)  Unfortunately, it was during quite a downpour.  Finally, when we got to US-1 the rain stopped and our trip south through the keys was sunny and bright.  When we arrived we were assigned a site too small for our RV and the park was flexible enough to move us to another spot.  Being May, the resort was less than a 1/4 full.  The section that we were assigned had been rebuilt after the last hurricane, so everything was new and nice.  However, no one caught that they installed the water and electrical on the wrong side of each site.  In the resort is a bar and grill called the Lobster Crawl which is very nice.  I understand that on Friday and Saturday nights, there is live music, but we arrived on a Monday.  The pool is beautiful and elevated a bit giving you quite a view of the ocean.  The resort is located about a third of the way down the keys, which worked great for us to drive the car the last hour and a half down to Key West.  I would definitely visit here again.   The resort is part of the Thousand Trails (Trails Collection) but with new restrictions put on the Trails Collection resorts, we reserved it through our RPI membership which actually was a couple of dollars cheaper.  My only complaint about the park is that when other RV friends of ours decided to meet us for lunch, the park wouldn't let them drive their coach in, even though there was plenty of room to park near the Restaraunt for an hour or so.

The drive to Key West is beautiful and a bit frustrating.  The speed limit changes often and there are several speed traps along the way, yet people are so impatient that they are willing to pass anywhere.  In Key West itself, tourist rent scooters and are zipping about town, (no helmets) without a care or thought of pedestrians or traffic.  The town is fun, with lots of shops, bars and places to eat.  We visited the furthest point south, which I don't think is, Fort Zachary Taylor, Mallory Square, and just walked about town.  Two cruise ships were in port, so there were lots of tourists.  I'm looking forward to a return trip some year.

Crystal Isles RV Resort

Crystal Isles was planned as just a stopover, but because of the manatees nearby, I thought it best to at least stay a couple of days.  It is a really nice resort and there are plenty of sights to see close by.  As always we take some time on the day we arrive to walk the resort.  Along the way, we did notice a good number of grasshoppers, but they seemed to be in only one small section of the park.  As I walked up to take a photo of a site with its own dock, the couple at the site next door said hi.  Ten minutes later, we were all drinking margaritas and talking like we've known each other for years.  (this is my favorite part of full-time RV'ing)  Meeting great people just makes the park!  During our chat, Jackie and I got acquainted with no-see-ums.  (who knew there would be bugs in Florida?)

We picked the wrong time of year to visit Crystal River because the manatees come up the river to its 72-degree springs to keep warm.  Just a few miles from the resort is Homosassa Springs Wildlife, State Park.  It has to be one of the best wildlife preserves in the country.  Well worth the $13 dollars to visit.  First and foremost are the manatees.  During the summer, the manatees there are rehabilitating from boating accidents and things.  Also, there is a large assortment of birds there along with alligators, a hippo, and various other animals.

Bugs withstanding, this is a really great resort, that we should have planned to stay a bit longer.  The park has most of the amenities that you would expect to find in a resort (and they're well maintained). I'm sure that we will revisit here in the future.
